The HPV Vaccine

The BBC is reporting that scientists and doctors in the UK will be meeting to discuss the need to vaccinate young men against HPV.

It is regularly said by health professionals in the US that HPV vaccine is something which is and should be only for females, but clearly the vaccine has been shown to be effective for men too.  Which is a good thing, since HPV has been determined to be the cause of some 2,000 cases of cancer each year in the UK alone.

The point to all of this? I don’t know that I have much of one. The CDC estimates that over 75% of the sexually active population has been or will be exposed to HPV. At least 15% are infected, however this number is believed to be low since there is no reliable test available for men yet.

In short, any kind of vaccine is not only a good idea, it’s vital to the general health of the population.

Ummmm . . .

I read several comics a day. Almost all of them bring a smile to my face every single installment which, let’s face it, is the sole reason to read strip comics (and FYI, my fav’s are over there on the right with links and everything). Today though, Questionable Content was both funny and gave me a “Huh.” moment. Perhaps a new method of meditation is on the horizon:

Enjoy, and belated Merry New Year’s!

Awesome. Simply awesome.

I’m back from Vegas, and I will write much much more about the trip later, but I’m short on time (Holiday shopping MUST be done today!) and I just wanted to share a little bit of TMI for all of you.

Consider yourselves warned. The first real Transformers trailer is out and it looks so bloody cool that I want to have sex with the TRAILER (YouTube here), much less the movie! Yes, it is that insanely hot. And I’m that insanely insane. Vegas’ll do that to you.

Optimus Prime, you’re my hero.

Golly Gee Whiz . . .

I’m writing my first post in my new WordPress Blog. My goal really is to make it so that I will no longer need to make use of my LiveJournal. Yes, this will mean that my friends will no longer be able to find me via their friends’ list, but at least it means that my styles are growing and changing . . . so there!

A note about the new name:

You see, I’ve always been a great big fan of history. Duh. Well, there is a movie coming out in a few months called 300 starring “Phantom” star Gerard Butler. It is the story of the 300 Spartan soldiers who held the pass of Thermopylae against as many as 200,000 Persians. Very famously, it was supposedly remarked to one of the Spartan soldiers that the Persian arrows will “block out the sun” to which he replied “So much the better, we shall fight in the shade.” (source).

I find this kind of mindset truly remarkable, and so as I am wont to do these days, I immediately went and registered a domain name to reflect it (I DO work for a domain registrar after all). What better title for a journal, anyway?

So that’s about me. I’m up MUCH later than I had planned on being, so I should really head get so shut eye. I was up very late last night watching the rest of season one of “How I Met Your Mother” (awwwww. It’s SO sweet . . . and I’d be a LOT more upset about Marshall/Lily if Smash hadn’t already told me they’ve already gotten back together . . . wow, I really am a girl).

One of the bonuses of this system is the ability to leave comments. So leave comments. Let me know if this is a good thing or not.
Later,
~Ash.

Hold on just a second . . .

OK, Congress has voted itself a salary raise almost every year for the past sixteen years to combat rising cost-of-living costs (sitting currently at around $165,000/year). Question: Why, for the past nine straight years, has minimum wage not been raised even once? Are poor people/students/me not affected by the same rises in the cost of living?

Just a thought.

What. The. HELL. Is. Wrong. With. These. “People”?!?!?!

Mesa, Arizona is one of three of the biggest forty cities in the United States which doesn’t have a property tax. One of the others is Las Vegas, NV which will never need additional funds as long as gambling is still legal. The other is some crappy town in Texas. We are in rather desperate need of funds, to the point where we were in danger of closing both of our museums and reducing the hours of the main library so that it is only open a few days a week. So, there was a bill to create a property tax. It wasn’t all that onerous. Only about 100 bucks a year for most homes. And for that money we would have kept these public things open, been able to fund more firefighters and police, and even been able to repair some of our notoriously bad city streets.

Well, consider the museums closed. Consider the library hours shortened, and the police and firefighters can stay home. The motion failed in yesterday’s election by a margin of 2 to 3 (40% for 60% against). The most common reason given for voting against in exit polling? “Because the city already mismanages their funds. If they really need the money so badly why did they sink $100 million in building an arts center?” WAKE UP YOU FUCKING MORONS! The Mesa Arts Center was built 100% without the use of city funds, you fuckwits! And the money we owe so badly which is forcing the budget cuts? We’ve owed it for over 20 years and the bill is just coming due! It’s no one’s fault who even still lives in Mesa! So you’ve decided to “teach the city council a lesson?” What, by ensuring that YOU can’t enjoy a safe city?

“Well why does Mesa need to keep growing anyway? Keep it the size it is!” (actual quote from the newspaper). Are you kidding me? Do you think this will stop people from moving into the city? NO! And you better hope it doesn’t anyway because then that precious property value that you are so fucking proud of is going to go right into the toilet. Hell it’s going to eventually anyway because really who wants to live in a city with no museums and a library which is only open three days a week?

My aunt has already asked if I want to sell her house for her. I said I would if she’d take me with her. I absolutely adore Mesa and have missed it since I’ve been gone, but seriously. This is just so ridiculous that I’ve been seeing red ever since I found out last night.

What is wrong with people?

Happy Birthday, Your Majesty

I know that it’d be a pretty typical thing for me to wish Happy Birthday to someone like Lolly Foy or John who play the king and queen out at the Renaissance Festival, but in this case I really do mean the Queen, Elizabeth II Regina. Today she turned 80. I know that of the entire population of Scotland the number of supporters of the Crown are probably limited to those who are in fact English, but I was still rather fond of them. If nothing else I liked to engage in the age-old game of commoners everywhere and imagine what it must have been like growing up knowing that you’re different from everyone else . . . and not in a bad way for once!

Anyway. So I thought that was kinda cool. Nothing much going on in my neck of the woods. I seem to live a rather boring life, as it turns out. I spend most of my days “doing work” (ie; surfing the net, avoiding doing work) and then whenever I can I try to spend my evenings with a pretty young lady by the name of A____. Yes, I’ve been reading too much Poe and the like. But A____ she’ll remain for the time being (in the interest of not further-jinxing an already-doomed relationship, that is. And yes, she’s the same girlie I took to Tombstone, Much Ado and whatnot. We had a blast on all counts, btw). Anyway, the point is that I think that means that I’ve officially joined the “working stiff world.” Work, play, work, play. Repeat until retirement and/or death. Hmmmm. It’s strange, that’s for damned sure.

Of course success in my chosen profession still eludes me. I’d be lying if I didn’t say that I was more than a little discouraged, but I’m not about to give it up yet. It’s the closest thing I’ve got to an actual career possibility so I’m not going to abandon it just because it’s not rendering up instant success. I am however going to seek a job in my previous pugilistic profession (yay alliteration!) and find a part time Door Steward job somewhere. I’m also earning a bit of spending cash by doing design work for SSC. We’ll have to see how that goes.

That’s a lot of writing for some poor sap to have to read, so I’ll take my leave. I hope you’re all just horribly well and I’ll speak to you soon I hope. Maybe by the time I write back something interesting will actually have happened!

Ciao.

Me Wednesday

Happy Me Wednesday. I never really realized that they had an entire Catholic holiday dedicated to yours truly, but it seems they do! Of course, it’s possible that Ash Wednesday was named after someone else, so here’s a website with all sorts of famous movie Ashes. In other news, . . .

No other news. I’m severely migraining it today and have no desire to continue my wittiness beyond what you’ve already observed. Have a good day/week/month everyone and I’ll see ya on the flip side.
